Hong Kong protests escalate sharply as protestors reject Chinese President’s proposal of ‘One Nation, Two Systems’

Beijing/Hong Kong – During the National Day address held in Beijing, Chinese President Xi Jinping once again appealed to Hong Kong to adhere by the ‘One Nation, Two Systems’. However, the Hong Kong protests on Tuesday proved that the proposal did not affect the Hong Kong protestors. The protestors, on the contrary, termed the Chinese National Day as a day of mourning and even set ablaze the Chinese national flag. One demonstrator was hit with a live bullet while 30 others were injured, during the Police action.

China celebrated the 70th anniversary of the Communist Party rule in China where 1st October is celebrated as the National Day. The day comprised of various celebrations featuring lights, parades and the flag hoisting ceremony in China, as also in the connected colonies such as  Hong Kong and Macao. Nevertheless, this year, the international community was mainly focused on the Chinese National Day as the Hong Kong protests overshadowed the celebrations.

In an effort to deflate the demonstrations in Hong Kong that have been going on since the last four months, the local administration decided to withdraw the controversial extradition bill at the start of September. After that, discussions with various civic groups were also initiated, although it did not affect the protestors and only aggravated the protests further. Even though President Jinping avoided the mention of Hong Kong directly, the reiteration of the ‘One Nation, Two Systems’ policy is believed to be in reference to Hong Kong.

At the same time, Jinping issued a stern warning to the countries interfering in Hong Kong saying that ‘no force can shake the status of this great nation’. The Tuesday protests however made evident that the protestors did not pay any heed to the warning. The great displeasure brewing in the protestors was vented by setting fires and targeting the Chinese businesses. What’s more, the Hong Kong Police used live fire to stop the protestors where one demonstrator was reportedly hit in the chest.
