China’s top diplomat, Yang Jiechi, warns Biden administration not to cross ‘red line’

Beijing/Washington: Senior Communist Party leader, Yang Jiechi, has issued a stern warning that Hong Kong, Tibet and Xinjiang affairs are a “red line” for the Chinese regime and the United States should not dare to cross it. At the same time, Yang said the US administration must stop harassing Chinese companies, media, educational institutions and students. Also, a leading think tank has suggested that along with threats from China to the Biden administration, Chinese President Xi Jinping is one of the most serious problems facing the democratic world and should be targeted by the new US administration.

Joe Biden took over as US president last month. According to claims, Biden and the Democratic Party’s stance on China are expected to be milder than former President Donald Trump. Therefore, Yang’s statements indicate China is preparing to retake an aggressive stance. While slamming the new US president, the Chinese leader also criticised former President Trump. In a warning to the new US administration, Yang said it bore a responsibility of making up for the damages caused by Trump’s misguided policies.

Yang told the Biden administration that ‘We in China hope that the United States will rise above the outdated mentality of zero-sum, major-power rivalry and work with China to keep the relationship on the right track. The US administration should stop harassing Chinese students and pressurising Chinese media, educational institutions and companies. At the same time, Hong Kong, Tibet, and Xinjiang affairs are a “red line” for the Chinese regime and the United States should not dare to cross it.’

Yang is a former Chinese foreign minister and a senior member of the ruling Communist Party’s most powerful body, the Politburo. His statements are, therefore, noteworthy. Last month, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi also slammed US policies. Wang said, ‘The US tried to suppress China and start a new Cold War. As a result, relations between the two sides have deteriorated and caused significant turmoil across the globe.’

Meanwhile, the Atlantic Council, a leading US think tank, has released a new report on China, targeting Chinese President Xi Jinping, the top authority of the Communist Party. The report, titled The Longer Telegram, warns that the Chinese President is a priority for the United States and the most severe problem faced by the entire democratic world. The report further suggested that the new US administration should prioritise action against Xi Jinping and his inner circle when pursuing a China policy.
