Fierce US airstrikes on Taliban; Taliban takes control of dam, closes down girls school

Kabul: Although the US military withdrawal is in progress, the United States has not stopped its fight against terrorism. A US official informed that the US fighter jets carried out fierce airstrikes on Taliban locations in the Helmand province. The airstrikes stopped the Taliban advance and provided significant support to the Afghan military. However, the Taliban has intensified its attacks in other parts of Afghanistan. The Taliban has taken control of a big dam in Afghanistan. At the same time, the group has also closed down a girls school in the Logar province.

According to the Afghan Defence Ministry, the Afghan military killed 179 Taliban terrorists in seven provinces over the last 24 hours. Also, 91 Taliban terrorists were injured in the military action in the Kandahar, Badghis, Balkh, Farah, Helmand, Takhar and Kunduz provinces. The Afghan Defence Ministry specially mentioned the action in the Helmand province. A total of 43 Taliban terrorists were killed in the Helmand province alone.

A US military official mentioned the military action in the Helmand province while speaking to a US news channel. The Taliban launched attacks on the Afghan military to take control over the Lashkar Gah city in Helmand. A US official informed that the US fighter jets launched fierce attacks on the Taliban to stop them from taking over the Lashkar Gah city. The official said the attacks were carried out a few days ago.

Local Afghan official Atikullah also informed that the United States had carried out heavy strikes. The official said he had not witnessed such intense attacks in many years. It is not yet clear if the United States had used the airbases in Afghanistan for launching the attacks. However, some claim the action was executed by the fighter jets on the US aircraft carrier USS Eisenhower, stationed in the Persian Gulf.

Although the Taliban had to retreat from the Helmand province, reports say the Taliban strikes have intensified in the other parts of Afghanistan. The Taliban has gained control over two districts in the Baghlan province in northern Afghanistan and has killed a police chief in the Paktia province. There has also been an incident where a renowned news anchor was shot dead by the Taliban in Kandahar.

The Taliban has seized the Dahla dam in Kandahar province. It is the second-largest dam in Afghanistan. Local officials are worried the Taliban could hold the government and the people of Afghanistan to ransom by capturing the dam. On the other hand, the Taliban has shut down a girls high school in the Logar province.

Meanwhile, the international community has voiced concerns that if the Taliban succeeds in taking over the government in Afghanistan after the US military withdrawal, women’s rights will be rolled back. The fears are turning into reality with the Taliban action in the Logar province.
