Morocco: Wildfire of terrorism is sweeping from the Sahel region to the Horn of Africa, the Commander of the United States Africa Command, General Stephen J. Townsend, said in a stern warning. Also, Townsend raised the alarm by saying that terrorist groups such as Al Qaeda, IS, and Al Shabaab are repeatedly carrying out attacks, and the international community must look into it seriously.
”I am deeply concerned about security in the African region. Terrorist attacks are on the rise everywhere, from the Sahel region to the Horn of Africa. Terror groups such as Al Qaeda, IS, and Al Shabaab have stepped up their attacks, strengthening their influence here. As a result, a wildfire of terrorism is sweeping across the band of Africa,” warned General Townsend. Although countries in the African continent are cooperating to curb terrorism, the efforts are not enough, Townsend said.
In the last few years, the activities of terrorist organizations in the areas of the Sahel and the Horn of Africa have increased significantly, and the African countries have failed miserably to combat it. These countries include Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, Chad, Nigeria, Somalia, Kenya. Al Qaeda and IS are also gaining ground in Africa along with Al Shabaab and Boko Haram.
France had deployed 5,000 soldiers to Mali and the Sahel region. France had also planned an independent operation called ”Operation Barkhane’Barkhane’ with African countries. However, the campaign, which has been going on since 2013, has not yet achieved the expected success. At the same time, the African Union and the United States have taken up a fight against terrorism in Somalia. However, despite drone strikes and large-scale operations, the terrorist organizations are seen to have increased their influence significantly.
