Berlin – The Coronavirus pandemic currently creating a real emergency in Germany would claim about 100,000 lives, warned German virologist Christian Drosten.In the last 48 hours, over 90,000 patients have been registered in Germany. Besides, the number of casualties has gone over 200 per day. So far, 49 million Corona cases have been reported in Germany, bringing the total number of victims to 97,000.
A few days ago, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned that currently, Europe is the only continent where the Coronavirus is spreading rapidly. WHO had pointed out that the number of Corona patients in Europe has been steadily rising for the past month and a half. The growing number of patients in Germany proves the case. Since the beginning of this month, over 30,000 Corona patients have been detected daily in Germany.
On Tuesday, the number went up to 40,000. While on Wednesday, the number of patients crossed the 50,000 mark, setting a new record. It is emerging that the relaxation of restrictions, recent elections, depression over vaccinations and winter are the factors behind this rapid growth in Covid patients. The total number of vaccinated citizens in Germany is about 67%. Although the German government has repeatedly appealed to the public, it has refused to force vaccinations. Thus, the pace of vaccination has slowed down. This is considered a significant factor behind the increasing number of patients and deaths.
Consequently, leading German virologist, Christian Drosten has issued an ultimatum. ‘We’re in a bad situation; we have 15 million people who could have been vaccinated and should have been vaccinated. This is extremely bad. We have to act right now. The current wave in Germany seems to be the worst. Another 100,000 people could die in this wave,’ warned Drosten.
It is emerging that in addition to Germany, the number of patients is rapidly escalating in Greece, France, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Apart from European countries, Russia and Ukraine are also daily reporting a record number of patients, informed local agencies. Russia has recorded more than 70,000 cases in the last two days, with more than 1,000 being killed every day in the past two weeks. In Ukraine, more than 40,000 people have been infected with Corona in 48 hours, and more than 1,500 have been killed.
