Moscow / Minsk – Belarus has indicated that Russia will deploy nukes amid tensions between Russia and the West rising to a climax over the Ukraine issue. Constitutional reforms have been done in Belarus for this, and soon it will get recognition, sources have claimed. A few days ago, it had surfaced that Russia had sent its nuclear bombers to Belarus. After that, on Sunday, Russian President Vladimir Putin sternly warned that if Russia rejects the proposal to ease tensions with NATO, it would be responded by using different options.

deploy nukesSince last August, the agitation has been going on in Belarus against President Lukashenko. Western countries have imposed sanctions for actions taken by Lukashenko on these protests. The Belarussian President has taken Russia’s help to get out of it. Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed defence and trade agreements with Belarus. The deployment of Russian troops in Belarus has been stepped up in return, and Russian Defence Systems have also been signalled for deployment. To ratify Russia’s deployment and retain his power, President Lukashenko has introduced a bill to amend Russia’s constitution.

The provision of Belarus being a nuclear-free zone has been removed from it. The syntax ‘Belarus is a non-aligned nation away from geopolitical equations’ has also been removed. This has drawn the attention of the Russian media and analysts claiming that it is an important step in the deployment of nuclear weapons. In this regard, similar statements were made by President Lukashenko last month and a few days ago by Belarus’s Foreign Minister.

‘What President Alexander Lukashenko said that we are considering the possibility of deploying nuclear weapons on the territory of Belarus is one of the likely responses to possible future actions by the North Atlantic Alliance on the territory of Poland,’ said Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei of Belarus.

Belarus has also indicated its readiness to deploy Russia’s advanced S-400 air defence system. Russia has deployed more than 100,000 troops along the Ukrainian border. The United States and European countries have warned that Russia will launch an attack on Ukraine; in the new year. The Russian President had given a proposal to ease these tensions. The proposal demands to give up the thought of including Ukraine and the countries in the sphere of Russian influence to join NATO and stop the efforts to set up US-NATO military bases in these countries.

The US and NATO have indicated that Russia’s proposal is not acceptable. Against this backdrop, Russian President Vladimir Putin had made it realize that diverse options will be used if the proposal is rejected and could ensue a dire situation. After that, the news of a possible nuclear deployment in Belarus surfacing proves to draw attention.
