Ukraine loses control of Lyman, prominent city in Donbas

Moscow / Kyiv – Russia has seized control of Lyman, a strategic city in the Donbas region. The seizure of Lyman is said to be Russia’s second major strategic victory this week. A few days ago, Russia also took control over the city of Svitlodarsk in Donbas. Information has also surfaced that Severodonetsk was besieged while seizing Lyman. Western countries that support Ukraine are also forced to acknowledge Russia’s success. The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson, has said that Russia is making great strides in the Donbas region.

LymanAs the battle of Donbas is a decisive struggle, Russia has escalated the intensity and scope of its attacks since last week. Russian cannons, tanks, rocket systems, missiles and fighter jets are roasting the cities in Donbas. A few days ago, a senior Ukrainian official claimed that Russia was using a scorched-earth policy in Donbas. Everyone from the President of Ukraine to the local authorities had to admit it forcibly. The most intense and strong struggle in the Russia-Ukraine conflict is currently raging in Donbas, and Russia seems to have succeeded from the events that have emerged in the last few days.

The control over the city of Lyman in Donbas on Friday confirmed that. Lyman is known as one of the strategic towns in the Donbas region. Slovyansk, an important transport and supply hub for the Ukrainian army, is just 20 km from Lyman. Therefore, it is said that after seizing Lyman, Russia will launch a new offensive to control Slovyansk.

On the other hand, Russia has escalated the scope of ongoing attacks on Severodonetsk and Lysychansk. Severodonetsk is under siege by Russian forces, claiming to have seized parts of the city border. Though it has been claimed that the Russian army entered Lysychansk, this has not been confirmed. If Severodonetsk falls into the hands of Russia, the province of Luhansk, which is part of Donbas, will be entirely under Russian control. Russian forces have seized a district near the town of Bakhmut in Donbas, local sources informed. The Russian military’s aggressive attacks in Donbas were as good as a genocide, Ukraine’s President Zelensky has claimed.

Meanwhile, in addition to Donbas, Russia has launched major attacks on Kharkiv in northern Ukraine and the city of Dnipropetrovsk in central Ukraine. In the last 24 hours, more than 20 people have been killed and more than 50 injured in the missile attacks on the two cities. Ukrainian military bases in Dnipropetrovsk were targeted, local officials informed. Ukraine’s Defence Ministry has informed that Russia has targeted military bases in southern Ukraine.
