Russia launches major drone attack on Ukrainian capital Kyiv

Moscow/Kyiv: Russia launched a major drone attack on Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, on Monday morning. These drone attacks have destroyed systems related to sensitive infrastructure and power supply systems. Authorities in the capital, Kyiv, acknowledged that the damage caused by Monday’s attack was severe. In the wake of this attack, Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Belarus. The possibility of Russia launching a new aggression against Ukraine, siding with Belarus, is being voiced repeatedly. In such a situation, Putin’s visit to Belarus assumes much significance.

    major drone attack

Despite the severe winter in Russia and Ukraine, the intensity of the conflict is increasing by the day. In the past few days, Ukraine has attacked some bases and fuel depots on Russian territory. Russia has started responding strongly to these attacks. Last Wednesday, Russia launched a drone attack on the capital, Kyiv. It used 13 Iranian drones and targeted infrastructure and sensitive areas in Kyiv.

Then on Friday, the Russian armed forces rained as many as 76 missiles on major cities, including the capital Kyiv. It was the 10th incident of such a large-scale Russian missile attack in the last three months. In Friday’s attack, facilities providing telecommunication services along with electricity and water supply systems are said to have also been significantly hit. In just three days after this attack, Russia again demonstrated its firepower by targeting the capital city of Kyiv.

Russia is said to have used more than 400 drones to attack Ukraine so far. A total of 35 drones were used in the drone strikes on early Monday morning. This attack targeted areas related to electricity supply, water supply and ‘heating systems’. After this attack, Ukraine and many other regions are said to have gone into darkness once again. Ukrainian authorities reported that power and water supplies were affected in nearly nine provinces, including Kyiv. Local authorities informed that some cities had imposed a ‘blackout’ again.

Although Ukraine’s military claimed to have shot down nearly 30 Russian drones, it also admitted to having caused heavy losses. Sources said that Monday’s drone attack has severely hampered efforts to restore power in the capital Kyiv and other parts of the country. Ukraine’s leading power grid operator Ukrenegro has warned that restoring power supply in the capital and other cities is not possible for the next few months.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has arrived in Belarus. Putin is on an official visit to Belarus for the first time in three and a half years. On Monday, he met President Alexander Lukashenko. Defence and security issues were discussed during the visit. Currently, about 10,000 Russian soldiers are stationed in Belarus. Apart from this, fighter jets and air defence systems have also been deployed, and talks are said to be ongoing regarding nuclear weapons. Moreover, Ukrainian and Western media have claimed that Russia would launch a new attack on Ukraine from the Belarus front.
