Moscow: Russia replied to President Trump saying, ‘The smart missiles should have been aimed at the terrorists and not at the legitimate Syrian government. This Syrian government is at war with the terrorists since a few years now’. The Russian Foreign Ministry questioned the basic objective behind the use of the smart missile and asked whether the missiles were going to be fired to destroy the evidence, when the investigation into the chemical attacks was still underway.
The Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Maria Zakharova pounced on President Trump’s statements about the Syrian attack. The United States had accused the Syrian government and its supporter – Russia, for the chemical attacks in Syria on Sunday. The United States Ambassador to the United Nations (UN) had castigated the stance taken by Russia regarding the Assad government in Syria. In reply, the Russian Ambassador had proclaimed that this chemical attack had not been carried out by the Syrian government.
Countries like Iran and Russia have raised accusations that the United States and its allies were responsible for the chemical attacks in Syria. These countries have questioned the need for the Assad government to resort to chemical weapons when it is already in a superior position. While replying to President Trump’s statements, the Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson on Wednesday made the same accusations in different words.
The ‘Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons’ (OPCW) will investigate the chemical attacks in Syria. Zakharova fired a round of allegations against the United States. She said that ‘this was an attempt by the United States to use the smart missiles in order to destroy the evidence of the chemical attacks before the investigation even started. Therefore, the international observers will never be able to find who was responsible for the chemical attacks’.
Syria has also refused the allegations of chemical attacks levelled against it and has reacted by saying that the threat by President Trump was not surprising. The Syrian Foreign Ministry has also accused the United States saying that the US was inciting terrorism in Syria.
