Huawei, ZTE & three other Chinese companies threaten US national security: Federal Communications Commission

Washington/Beijing: The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced that five Chinese companies, including Huawei and ZTE, which are closely associated with China’s ruling regime and military, are a threat to the US national security. The decision is indicative of the new Biden administration in the United States maintaining former President Donald Trump’s policy on technology. China has reacted sharply to President Biden’s decision, with a warning from its spokesperson that the decision would jeopardize trade ties between them.

Jessica Rosenworcel, Acting FCC Chairwoman, described the nature of action against Chinese companies. “This list provides meaningful guidance that will ensure that as next-generation networks are built across the country, they do not repeat the mistakes of the past or use equipment or services that will pose a threat to US national security or the security and safety of Americans,” Rosenworcel explained. In addition to Huawei and ZTE, the US FCC list includes Hikvision Digital Technology, Hytera Communications and Dahua Technology.

Huawei, ZTE and the other three firms have close ties to China’s ruling Communist Party and military. Under Chinese law, the companies are required to share their data with Chinese intelligence. Major countries in the world, including the United States, have voiced fears that the Chinese authorities could tamper with critical infrastructure, including the US communications network.

The crackdown on Huawei, a leader in 5G technology, is seen as a significant milestone in the US-China conflict. In the last three years, Former President Donald Trump had initiated an aggressive campaign against China. As part of the crackdown, a series of actions were taken against Chinese companies operating in critical sectors associated with US security.

In 2019, then-President Trump declared a national emergency while targeting Chinese companies in the telecommunications sector. Subsequently, the United States banned investments in Chinese company China Mobile.

Action against China was expected to ease after Joe Biden took office in January. China’s aggressive activities after Biden came to power only confirmed this. Huawei CEO Ren Zhengfei had also said that the relations would improve during Biden’s tenure. In the wake of the events, the crackdown on five leading Chinese companies in the tech sector is remarkable. The new decision signals that Trump’s aggressive stance against China is justified.
