Turkey preparing for genocide under the pretext of setting up Safe Zones: Syrian Foreign Minister, Walid Moallem.

Erbil: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced constructing ‘Safe Zones’ for 3 million immigrants. Turkey claims that safe zones would ensure the safety of the state. However, the Syrian Foreign Minister, Walid Moallem alleged that Turkey was conspiring to commit genocide under the garb of building the safe zones. Also, Moallem warned Turkey saying, ‘Turkey must decide whether it wants to remain Syria’s neighbour or turn into an enemy’.

Last week, while addressing the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), the Turkish President had proposed constructing safe zones in Syria. The refugee ‘safe zones’ will be set up in the Turkish military-controlled area that stretches across 50 miles close to north-western Syrian borders in Raqqa, President Erdogan said. He further added that ‘The safe zones would host the Syrian migrants seeking asylum in neighbouring countries. The zones are currently restricted at Raqqa, but in future, they may be extended up to Deir ez-Zor to accommodate the migrants’.

Nevertheless, the Syrian Foreign Minister has criticised the strategy. ‘The plan proposed by President Erdogan, to bring the Syrian refugees home, is fraudulent. If Erdogan were so worried about the security of the Syrian refugees, he would have first discussed it with the Assad regime. The safe zones are meant only for genocide,’ Moallem reprimanded.

The Syrian Foreign Minister even threatened Turkey. He said, ‘Turkey must decide whether it wants to be a neighbour or turn into an adversary,’ as he warned of initiating military action. The clashes between Turkey and Syria had surfaced in the past as well. Turkey is a staunch opponent of the Assad regime while Syria has accused Turkey of taking control of parts of northern Syria under its counter-terrorism operation.

Erdogan had earlier threatened that if the West does not concur on setting up the safe zones for the asylum seekers, Turkey will initiate military action in Syria. As the deadline assigned by Turkey to decide on the matter has approached, the country is believed likely to strike Syria soon. On the contrary, the Assad regime had warned Turkey to withdraw from Syria in good time. Therefore, it has heightened the chances of confrontation between the pro-Assad forces and the Turkish military in northern Syria.
