London: British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced an ambitious plan to decide the British position post-Brexit on the international level. ‘The United Kingdom has to keep abreast with the world changing at a rapid pace. It thus becomes necessary for the UK to draw up foreign policy, keeping in view the national interests of today and upcoming decades. Also, adopting and using new technology is imperative.’
For the first time since the Cold War, the British government will be making a comprehensive assessment of the foreign, defence, security and development policies. The plan has been named as the ‘Integrated Review’ separate administrative officers, and a task force will be appointed for the purpose. Even though a combined assessment of the foreign policy was carried out in the past, it only involved the defence ministry. However, considering Brexit, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has made preparations to draw up a comprehensive policy for the present and future of defence, foreign relations, internal security and development which has been named as the ‘Integrated Review’.
Prime Minister Johnson has mentioned the Cold War in his statement and asserted that the change would be most significant since then. The British Prime Minister has highlighted that the United Kingdom should take advantage of the opportunities that are to present themselves in the coming decades and make necessary moves to fulfil the primary concerns of the government. Furthermore, the is a decisive moment to assess how the United Kingdom would adjust with the world and decide priorities based on that, Johnson warned.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson has mentioned five reforms in his statement. The first one involves the ambitious plan to decide Britain’s position in the world by focusing on finalising long-term policy objectives for national security and foreign relations. The second stressed cooperation with the partner and allied countries where importance was assigned to the UK’s contribution towards resolving the issues of international concern.
Going further, the third one involves defining the UK’s capabilities, objectives and threats. The one after that stresses upon reforms in the UK administration and agencies. The fifth and the final point mentions drawing up a plan on how the United Kingdom would remain active on the international level in the next decade. At the same time, Prime Minister Johnson has expressed his firm decision on not deviating in any way from the decision to make a provision of more than 2% of the GDP for the British nuclear capabilities and defence expenditure.
