Washington: ‘President Nixon once said he feared he had created a ‘Frankenstein’ by opening the world to the Chinese Communist Party. If we observe the Chinese Communist Party’s activities, his fears sadly appear to have turned true,’ said Secretary of State Mike Pompeo as he took aim at the Chinese regime. ‘The time is right to oppose the Chinese Communist Party’s activities. If the US submits to it, our future generations would have to live off their favours,’ said Pompeo in stern words as he stated the threat the ruling Chinese Communist regime posed.
The US has sparked an aggressive diplomatic war against China by accusing the state of being responsible for Coronavirus pandemic, which has claimed the lives of millions across the globe. As part of the struggle, the US administration has launched an awareness campaign to inform US citizens about Chinese activities. Members of the Trump administration are presenting the firm US policy on China as part of the campaign at various events. Last month, the US National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien, FBI Director Christopher Wray and Attorney General William Barr drew attention to the ill-intended activities of the Chinese Communist Party. Secretary of State Pompeo’s address at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum is the next phase of the campaign.
The mention of former US President Richard Nixon in Pompeo’s speech at an event that was titled the ‘Communist China and the Free World’s Future’ assumes much significance. In 1972, then US President Richard Nixon had visited China, a country with which the US did not have any political ties at the time. The efforts of Henry Kissinger, senior US diplomat and former State Secretary, are believed to have made the visit possible. Moreover, the cooperation between the US and China that was established after Nixon’s visit had proved a crucial phase in the Cold War against Soviet Russia. By mentioning Nixon’s remarks just as the US-China relations are about to complete five decades, Secretary of State Pompeo has indicated ending the ties.
At the start of his address, State Secretary Pompeo highlighted the Chinese Communist Party’s policy to dominate the world. The Coronavirus pandemic, Hong Kong, oppression in Xinjiang, unfair trade practices, aggressive Chinese military activities, were all part of the China’s expansionist policy, said Pompeo as he drew attention to them. All the free and democratic countries of the world needed to rise against the challenge, Pompeo said. Also, the US State Secretary warned that if the countries did not attempt to change Communist China, the Chinese Communist Party would change all.
‘We must admit the truth that should guide us in the years and decades to come, that if we want to have a free 21st century and not the Chinese century of which Xi Jinping dreams, the old paradigm of blind engagement with China won’t get it done. We must not continue it, and we must not return to it’ Pompeo said as he indicated the US-China relations would not remain the same anymore. The western world has ignored the destructive policies of Chinese Communism. However, any transaction with China cannot be treated as ordinary henceforth,’ Pompeo warned.
Accusing the Communists of always lying, Pompeo asserted that the Chinese Communist Party and the military were not concerned about its people. As he informed about the forceful stand of President Trump and his administration against Chinese activities, he provided details on the closure of the Houston consulate. Pompeo justified the decision by calling the office a hub of spying and intellectual property theft.
A severe reaction has emerged over the US allegations on the Chinese Communist Party. ‘What he (Pompeo) is doing is as futile as an ant trying to shake a tree. The US is launching a new crusade against China in a globalised world,’ the Chinese Foreign Ministry criticised. China even responded to the closure of the Houston consulate with orders to shutter US consulate in Chengdu.
