Tensions rise in Korean Peninsula as North and South Korea test ballistic missiles on same day

Pyongyang/Seoul: North Korea test-launched ballistic missiles on Wednesday. Following these tests, even South Korea announced conducting a submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) test. South Korean President Moon Jae-in warned that ‘Enhancing our missile capability is exactly what’s needed as deterrence against North Korea’s provocation.’ Analysts claim that tests conducted by both countries on the same day have once again has raised tensions in the Korean Peninsula.

Three days ago, North Korea tested a nuclear-capable long-range cruise missile. The new cruise missile demonstrated an ability to hit targets 1,500 km away, claimed North Korean media. There were claims that this test was an attempt by North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un to intimidate the United States and its allies. Against the backdrop, the test of a new ballistic missile on Wednesday draws attention. Besides, the test was in violation of UN sanctions.

The North Korean missile launched on Wednesday flew about 800 km. Japan claims that the missile landed in the Sea of Japan, a part of Japan’s territorial waters. The United States and South Korea have responded to it, saying they are pursuing detailed information on the launch. The launches came while the foreign ministers of South Korea and China were discussing the North Korean issue in a meeting in Seoul on Wednesday. It has once again demonstrated North Korea’s aggression.

Just hours after North Korea’s test, South Korea successfully tested a submarine-launched ballistic missile in its territorial waters. South Korea has not officially announced the range of the missile. Thus, South Korea is now the seventh country in the world to have successfully tested a submarine-launched ballistic missile. President Moon Jae-in oversaw the tests and warned that South Korea would continue to develop new weapons against nuclear-armed North Korea’s ‘asymmetric capabilities’. It is the first time that North and South Korea tested ballistic missiles on the same day.

Analysts have raised concerns as the tensions in the Korean Peninsula rise due to North Korea’s tests and South Korea‘s aggressive stance to counter it.
