Beijing / Taipei – China’s stance over Taiwan’s reunification issue is gradually becoming extreme. Following President Xi Jinping’s remarks, the Chinese media and the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) have initiated a spate of aggressive warnings and threats. The state-controlled mouthpiece, Global Times, has threatened Taiwan with a ‘Doomsday’. Subsequently, PLA is on ‘high alert’ for action against Taiwan, China’s Defense Ministry has warned.  

At an event last week, Chinese President Jinping had made a statement on Taiwan’s reunification. ‘Taiwan‘s independence and separatism are the biggest obstacles to achieving national rejuvenation. The historical task of the complete reunification of the motherland will be recognised as the peaceful reunification best meets the overall interests of the Taiwanese people,’ he said. The statement had provoked strong reactions from Taiwan. Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen had warned that there should be absolutely no illusions that the Taiwanese people will bow to pressure. Consequently, the Chinese media and the PLA have become more aggressive.  

Within 24 hours of the Taiwanese President’s statement, China has started a new military exercise. Sources have claimed that it was a preparation for the invasion of Taiwan. Later, PLA warplanes once again started buzzing over the Taiwanese airspace. China’s defence forces issued a new warning to Taiwan on Friday. It said that the PLA is on ‘high alert’ for the campaign against Taiwan. ‘China’s defence forces will decisively defeat the pro-independence forces of Taiwan and the interfering external forces,’ slams Tan Kefei, a spokesman for the Defense Ministry.  

While the Chinese defence forces are announcing a ‘high alert’ over the Taiwan issue, Chinese media also seems to have become aggressive. Just last week, the state-controlled Global Times reported that China would have no other option than to start a war. Taiwan is now directly threatened with a Doomsday. It claims that the statements of China’s ruling regime are simply the preparedness to deliver a final solution to the Taiwan issue. According to a Global Times article, China’s nuclear capabilities will also prevent the United States from exercising military blackmail against China through Taiwan.  

Earlier this month, about 150 Chinese warplanes intruded Taiwan’s Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ). This is the biggest ever intrusion evident. Besides infiltration of fighter jets, information has emerged that China has started to practice in various parts to invade Taiwan and increased deployments. This promoted tensions between China and Taiwan to reach their peak, with many analysts and experts predicting a conflict.
