Russia will be forced to deploy nuclear weapons in Europe

Moscow – Russia will deploy nuclear weapons in Europe if NATO rejects a proposal not to deploy nuclear weapons, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov has warned. NATO activated the ’56th Artillery Command’ last month. Besides, the statements being made for the last few days indicate that NATO is preparing to deploy nuclear weapons in Europe, Minister Ryabkov claimed at the time. Taking an aggressive stance on the Ukraine issue, Russia has already warned that NATO’s deployment in the country would be a ‘red line’.

Moreover, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov warned that if tensions about Ukraine are to be eased, the western countries should give Russia the necessary security guarantee. The ban on the deployment of Intermediate-range nuclear forces (INF) in Europe is a part of that. If the West decline to join the moratorium, Russia will have to take action. Russia will respond by deploying nuclear weapons; at the military level, he further said. Ryabkov also warned that Russia was forced to take the stand because there were indirect indications of NATO’s deployment in Europe for the past few days.

According to the 1987 INF Treaty, deploying intermediate-range nuclear weapons was banned in Europe. Following the agreement reached between the United States and Russia, the two countries had destroyed nearly more than two and a half thousand intermediate-range nuclear weapons. But in 2019, then US President Donald Trump had decided to quit the INF treaty. Russia then withdrew from the treaty as well. Besides, it had surfaced that following the developments, both US and Russia began testing and deployment preparations, along with developing intermediate-range nuclear weapons. There were allegations from the US that Russia had already developed an intermediate-range nuclear weapon.

The issue has once again come to the fore in the wake of tensions in Ukraine. News and claims that Russian President Vladimir Putin is preparing for an invasion of Ukraine have been released for the past few days. Tension in the region has started rising as while making claims, the media and the systems have released photographs of information on Russia’s military movements. But Russia has denied claims of allegations of an attack on Ukraine. Instead, it has accused the US and NATO of provocative actions. Russia had proposed to reduce tensions in Ukraine, as well.

Therein, NATO had been demanding to give up on the proposal of membership to Ukraine and Georgia and stop defence deployments in the region. But the US and NATO have rejected this demand of Russia. Thus, Russia seems to become more and more aggressive. Before the warning of nuclear deployment, either guarantee Ukraine will not become a new base for NATO’s anti-Russian activities or risk a major conflict, Ryabkov had warned.
