Washington/Beijing: US President Donald Trump issued a stark warning against China. He said, ‘Obviously, China is a threat to the world in a sense, because they’re building a military faster than anybody, and, frankly, they’re using US money.’ While addressing a press conference with Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, Trump also accused his predecessors of letting China steal the US money and intellectual property.
A trade war is raging between the United States and China and has severely hit the Chinese economy as a consequence. However, despite the declining economy, China has made significant provisions for bolstering its military might and has begun the modernisation of its military at a rapid pace. In 2019, China hiked its defence budget to a whopping $152 billion, marking a significant increase of 7% over the previous year.
President Trump alleged that the massive provisions for the military and efforts to increase the military might were funded with the unfair profits from the trade with the United States. President Trump targeted the previous US administrations saying, ‘The Us Presidents before him allowed China to rip off the United States to the tune of$500 billion or more per year. Moreover, China also stole intellectual property and the rights to it during this period.’
The US President stated that the sanctions imposed on China had enabled the money to return to the United States and therefore, China was making frantic efforts to sign a trade agreement with them to put an end to it. Furthermore, China is using the profits from trade with the United States for augmenting its military strength, making it necessary to take serious cognisance of the matter, President Trump warned.
A few months ago, the US Department of Defence had submitted a report to the US Congress. The report highlighted that China had accelerated the pace of its security and defense-related activities. The report also focused on the military bases China had built on the artificial islands in the South China Sea, the military base in Africa’s Djibouti and the activities in the Indo-Pacific and Arctic regions.
At the same time, the US Department of Defence expressed severe concerns over China’s hyper sonic missile tests and the efforts towards the development of the electromagnetic rail gun and directed energy weapons. US President Donald Trump has thus once again, drawn the attention of the world to the threat China posed by linking the Chinese man oeuvres in the defence sector and the trade war.
