Washington: The Chief of Staff of the US Army General James McConville indicated that the United States had started preparations for global combat. He said the US military units should be stationed in all the corners of the world, ready for battle, rather than sitting at standby in military bases in the country. The United States has announced additional deployment in Saudi, after the attacks on the oil facilities. At the same time, the Afghan conflict is also likely to intensify, as the peace talks were scrapped with the Taliban. On the sidelines of the developments, the indications of the US Army Chief are noteworthy.
General James McConville clarified his policy saying, ‘It’s wonderful that we have a brigade, sitting maybe at Fort Campbell, that’s at the highest level of readiness. But we also need to get that brigade to wherever it is required to protect our interests and that maybe by airlift, it may be by sealift. They realise that we have to move our forces, so we can dynamically move them around the globe according to where their requirements are. That is what we talk about with strategic readiness, and that is a concern that I think at my level, I need to really go after.’
While elaborating on the position, General McConville mentioned about the National Defence Strategy President Trump had announced. Gen McConville further clarified that henceforth the US military deployment would be in the order of preferences stated in the National Defence Strategy.
‘As per priorities set in the National Defence Strategy, the US military deployment will be made, and exercises will also be held. The deployment will be in line with the military policies and strategies. The locations will even include parts of the world, that are not easily accessible from the United States. While holding massive war exercises in Europe, war games on a similar scale will also be held in the Indo-Pacific region,’ General McConville said.
US Army chief claimed that instead of sending the US military units to a particular part of the world when the need arises or after the occurrence of an event, the army would remain deployed in the sector ahead of time. In an interview with a defence website, he also said that the focus would remain on the priorities for deployment of the US military and creating a proper base. Furthermore, Gen. McConville clarified that the Pacific sector and the Asian countries would also be on the priority list along with Europe.
Given the escalating tensions, the United States has stressed on stepping up the deployment in the Middle East. Simultaneously, the US bases in Australia have also been strengthened because of the growing Chinese bullying in the South China Sea. Moreover, the statements of the US Army chief also indicate changes in deployment, in Southeast Asian countries, along with Japan and South Korea all of which are located near China.
