The first global cyber warfare will flareup this year, warns economist Nouriel Roubini

Washington: ‘The United States has imposed sanctions against Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea and these countries cannot retaliate against the United States in conventional warfare. Therefore, the countries will use unconventional war techniques to stop the United States. That will cause the first flareup of a global cyberwar’, Economist Nouriel Roubini warned. Also, Roubini cautioned that the Presidential elections in the United States this year would be a crucial stage of the cyberwar. Only last year, the US cyber command had indicated that the threat of cyberattacks from Russia, China, Iran and North Korea had risen.

Roubini is a senior Professor in the New York University and a founder of an economic advisory company. During Barack Obama and Bill Clinton’s presidency, he worked with US administration in the capacity of an economist and advisor. Currently, Nouriel Roubini, who is a member of the advisory committee at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), is recognised as a leading economist in the country. His prediction, which was made two years before the economic recession had hit the United States in 2008-09, created a sensation.

Given his background, Roubini’s warning regarding the global cyber war becomes significant. In his statement, Roubini has stated that the countries of Russia, China, Iran and South Korea will fight against the United States in the cyberwar. The economic and other sanctions imposed against these countries will be the primary contributing factor for the cyberwar, Roubini asserted.

These countries cannot retaliate against the United States in conventional ways. The United States is more powerful than the countries in conventional warfare. These countries, which are far weaker than the United States in that regard, will resort to the use of unconventional warfare techniques to stop the United States. In such a warfare, the enemy is weakened from within. The cyber war will accomplish just that. We will, therefore, be able to witness the first flareup of global cyber warfare in the next year,’ Roubini affirmed.

Roubini said, ‘Russia, China, Iran and North Korea aim to create a divide within the United States and counter its strength as a global superpower. These countries hold a firm belief that the United States wants a change their governments or make them weaker. The countries will thus try to retaliate and will choose to do so through the cyber sector,’ as he clarified the reason behind the forecast.

Roubini’s warning is noteworthy given the background of cyberattacks on the US as also the US preparations with United States Cyber Command (USCYBERCOM) and cyber weapons. A few months ago, a daily in the United States had reported that the US Cyber Command was planning to carry out cyberattacks on Russia. US intelligence department, defence department and the cyber command have consistently expressed concerns over the cyberattacks originating from Russia, China, Iran and North Korea. Moreover, they have warned that the attacks may intensify shortly.
