Washington: US Senator Marco Rubio stated that Russia’s hand is clearly found in the unprecedented cyberattacks on the US and sternly demanded a tit-for-tat retaliation. Since Senator Rubio leads the Senate Intelligence Committee, his statements assume much significance. On Friday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had admitted Russia’s hand is behind the cyberattacks on the country.
Senator Rubio made an uncompromising demand and said, ‘The extent of the cyberattacks on the US has not been determined as yet. However, the hack is unprecedented, and we have previously observed that very few nations in the world have the capacity to execute it. The methods used to carry out the cyberattack are consistent with Russian cyber operations, but it’s crucial we have complete certainty about who is behind. We can’t afford to be wrong on attribution, because America must retaliate, and not just with sanctions.’
Also, the senator warned that ‘The attacks launched by Russian agencies were the most dangerous in history, the effects of which have not surfaced as yet. It will require significant number of resources and time to come out from the threat altogether. The US, however, needs to deliver a forceful and befitting retaliation to the attack.’ Marco Rubio is the Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, which oversees the operations of the US intelligence agencies.
Two years ago, the White House had allowed US agencies to make counter-attacks against foreign threats in cyberspace, for which the use of cyberweapons was approved. Following the approval, the US Cyber Command was revealed to have launched an aggressive cyber campaign against Russia as well as Iran. Last year, senior US officials indicated that such attacks could be used against China’s actions. Considering the events, the demand Rubio made is striking.
Meanwhile, General Sir Nick Carter, British Chief of the Defence Staff, has warned of the dangers from Russia and China, saying they need to have the capacity to respond to the cyber-attacks. In the near future, both Russia and China will pose significant challenges to Britain’s security, as well as a major threat, General Carter warned. He added that the UK needed new strategies to defeat the two countries and that it must learn to beat them at their own game.
The British military chief said that while formulating policies against Russia and China, it must lay a particular focus on the cyber sector and the dissemination of information. Moreover, General Carter also advised that the cyber-response capabilities needed to be developed in such a way that it did not spark off a war.
