US makes fresh deployment of nuclear-powered B-52 bombers to Middle East

Washington: Two more of US’ nuclear-powered B-52 bombers have arrived in the Middle East. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) has stated that they had made the deployments to show its commitment towards the security of its Arab allies in the region. The US media has noted that it is the third deployment of bombers the US has made in the last 45 days to the Middle East. Also, US nuclear submarine USS Georgia had entered the regional waters only a few days ago.

The US B-52 bombers took off from North Dakota Air Force Base and flew over the Persian Gulf in a 30-hour mission on Wednesday. The US CENTCOM, a military unit established for the Middle East, provided details on the bombers’ deployment. US CENTCOM Commander General Frank McKenzie said the deployments were made to assure allied nations that the US was committed to their protection from aggressive and dangerous enemies in the region.

After entering the airspace of allied nations, the planes patrolled the Persian Gulf. A senior US military official stated that the nuclear-capable B-52H Stratofortress bombers’ patrols are nothing but a warning for Iran. Iranian leaders and military officials are repeatedly threatening to target US interests in Iraq and other Middle East regions. The official said that the deployments had therefore been made because of the situation.

A year ago, Quds Forces head Major General Qassem Soleimani was killed in US air raids. Sunday marks his first death anniversary of the Iranian general. Iran and Iranian-affiliated groups are believed to be waiting for the opportunity to avenge the killing. Even senior Iranian military officials have been threatening to seek harsh revenge for Soleimani’s killing.

A few days ago, Iranian-backed terrorist groups in Iraq had launched rocket attacks on the US Embassy in Baghdad. Sensing the rising threat from Iran under such circumstances, the US sent its bombers to the region as a warning to Iran. A severe reaction emerged from Iran after the US bombers arrived in the area. Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif expressed the possibility of an attack as he said, ‘The US is looking for an excuse to attack Iran. The US may fabricate a reason for attacking Iran.’

Foreign Minister Javad Zarif said has issued a threat as he said, ‘President Donald Trump is wasting billions of dollars in the Middle East by sending nuclear-capable B-52 bombers and a fleet of warships. According to intelligence gathered from spies in Iraq, the US is looking for a pretext to start a war. Iran does not wish to go to war but will participate in it more aggression for its citizens’ security’. Meanwhile, media reports inform that even as the US deploys nuclear-capable bombers and submarine in the Persian Gulf, it has called back its aircraft carrier USS Nimitz from the region.
