China-Russia join forces against US-EU

Beijing: “The United States is building new military-political alliances, similar to the Cold War era, to achieve its destructive goals, and is dismantling the world order based on the United Nations (UN). Under such circumstances, Russia and China, joining hands with each other, is essential for maintaining a system based on the modern rule of law,’ Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said. Lavrov is currently on a visit to China. As Russia’s relations with the United States are becoming increasingly strained, his visit to China is seen as one holding great strategic importance.

The Biden administration had stated that Russia is an enemy of the United States while China is its rival. President Biden even went on to call Russian President Vladimir Putin ‘a killer’. The comment prompted a severe backlash from Russia. Besides, the United States has imposed sanctions on Russia over the arrest of Navalny, a bitter opponent of President Putin.

Simultaneously, the Biden administration has also threatened to impose sanctions on the natural gas pipeline project between Russia and Germany. Due to the support of the Biden administration, Ukraine has initiated aggressive moves against Russia. By activating NATO in Europe, the Biden administration has given clear indications of preparing to encircle Russia once again. In such a scenario, Russia’s foreign minister, who is currently on a visit to China, has accused the United States of harbouring destructive intentions.

The United States is rebuilding its military and political alliances from the Cold War era and is preparing to dismantle the UN-backed international order. Russia’s foreign minister has warned that the United States is using the world’s reserve currency, the dollar, as a weapon to realise its destructive intentions. That is why Foreign Minister Lavrov has suggested to China that the two countries should use their currencies as well as other world currencies as an alternative to the US dollar. Likewise, Russia’s foreign minister has urged that both Russia and China stop using Western payment systems and use other options.

In a joint statement, the Russian and Chinese foreign ministers stated that Western countries were trying to impose the system they want on other countries and opposed the move. Foreign Minister Lavrov and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi also expressed their determination to unite against the United States’ unilateral sanctions. Moreover, Foreign Minister Lavrov drew attention to the fact that while, on the one hand, Russia’s relations with the European Union are currently strained, its ties with China are developing simultaneously and rapidly.
