Taipei: Taiwan’s Cyber Security chief Chien Hung-wei has announced that Taiwan is fully prepared for a ‘Cyber World War III’ against China. Every month, Taiwan faces 20 to 40 million cyberattacks. Most of the cyberattacks are being perpetrated by China,’ Chien said as he made a serious allegation. However, Taiwan has been able to defend against most of the cyberattacks, Chien asserted.
Last month, Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Joseph Wu accused China of trying to take over Taiwan in different ways. China has continued these efforts from deploying missiles against Taiwan to infiltrating fighter jets and destroyers into Taiwan’s borders. At the same time, Wu also reminded that China was subjecting Palau, Paraguay and Nicaragua, countries cooperating with Taiwan, to political pressure. Foreign Minister Wu had accused China of using cyberattacks to spread propaganda and misinformation against Taiwan’s democratic leadership.
During an interview with a US news channel, Chien Hung-Wei, Taiwan’s head of Cyber Security, said that ‘China was preparing to wage a cyberwar against Taiwan. Therefore, Taiwanese agencies are conducting a large cybersecurity exercise’. The Taiwanese Cyber Security head explained that with the help of more than 24 cyber experts, millions of cyberattacks were deliberately being launched on Taiwanese government systems and repelled in the exercise.
‘All of Taiwan’s transactions rely heavily on the internet. ‘Gas, water, electricity and critical infrastructure are fully digitalized. Therefore, Taiwan’s entire system could collapse during such cyberattacks. It thereby necessitates such preparations,’ said Chien.
Taiwan’s head of cybersecurity has accused China, saying ’20 to 40 million cyberattacks are carried out on Taiwan’s systems every month. Most of the attacks are executed by China.’ Chien believes the origins of the cyberattacks can be traced back to China after reviewing its operations.
Cyber attackers and hackers affiliated with China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) have been at the centre of debates for weeks. Moreover, Chinese hackers were also found responsible for the cyberattacks on India, the United States, Australia and Japan.
