Taliban captures 10th provincial capital in Afghanistan and police headquarters in Lashkargah

Kabul: The Afghan Army announced that 217 Taliban militants had been killed in its operations in the past 24 hours. However, it has not affected the Taliban attacks. On Thursday, the Taliban militants seized the capital of Ghazni province. Also, in the last 12 days, the Taliban has taken control of ten provincial capitals. The Taliban’s control over Ghazni is considered a threat to the capital, Kabul. Meanwhile, according to reports, the Taliban has taken over the police headquarters in Lashkargah, the capital of Helmand province.

A few hours ago, the US intelligence warned that the Taliban would besiege the Afghan capital, Kabul, in the next 30 days and take control of it in 90 days. The Taliban appear to have taken steps to realise the US intelligence warning with the capture of Ghazni, the capital of Ghazni province, on Thursday. The city of Ghazni, 130 kilometres from Kabul, is known as the highway connecting the capital of Afghanistan. In the offensive launched by the US and NATO forces in Afghanistan two decades ago, they had captured Ghazni before seizing Kabul. Now, the Taliban is feared to turn its attention to Kabul after taking over Ghazni.

For the past few days, the US has been carrying out airstrikes on Helmand’s capital, Lashkargah. The Taliban militants are said to have suffered heavy casualties in operation, with locals claiming their bodies were lying on the streets. In such a situation, fear has spread among the locals as the Taliban controls the police headquarters. Reports state that the Taliban have taken control of the police headquarters in Herat, the capital of Herat province, just like in Lashkargah. At the same time, the Taliban attacked prisons in about six cities and freed 1,000 of their comrades.

The Taliban have also been carrying out heavy attacks along the border with Iran. Only two days ago, Iran had instructed the Taliban to reduce the intensity of attacks on the border. Nevertheless, the Taliban seem unwilling to listen to anyone. On Thursday, the Taliban shot down an Iranian reconnaissance drone and released a photo of it, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid revealed. Following the incident, Iran has temporarily closed its consulate, recalling its diplomatic officials in Mazar-e-Sharif.

Meanwhile, fearing the Taliban’s escalating attacks, the Afghan people are fleeing to neighbouring countries for refuge. However, photographs have emerged of Pakistan closing the Spin Boldak-Chaman border. Furthermore, the United States demanded Pakistan grant asylum to Afghan refugees. But Pakistan has snubbed the request and put Afghan refugees in a fix.
