London: ‘The US and UK’s decision of military withdrawal from Afghanistan is foolish and would have catastrophic repercussions. I think the reality is we now face a terrorist threat that is greater than anytime since before 9/11,’ warns former senior UK military official Colonel Richard Kemp. Kemp has served as the Commander of the British Forces in Afghanistan. Hence, his warning is noteworthy.
‘I think the reality is we now face a terrorist threat that is greater than anytime since before 9/11, including at the height of the Islamic State’s control of parts of Syria. Soon, terrorists will flood into Afghanistan from around the world; they’ll train and prepare and carry out attacks on our countries,’ former UK Commander Colonel Richard Kemp warned. The withdrawal and defeat of the United States and the UK from Afghanistan are inspiring terrorists around the world to attack us, including the ones in the UK,’ Colonel Richard Kemp cautioned.
Colonel Richard Kemp further points out that ‘The only way we can combat it is by intelligence on the ground, intelligence using airborne censors etc. and interception of communication. It leads us to target attacks against concentrations of terrorists who are planning to kill us. However, the capacity to do it has reduced since there are no foreign forces in Afghanistan.’ General Sir Richard Barrons, a former senior British military officer, has cautioned the UK against the risk of terrorist attacks to it and its interests by the ‘IS-Khorasan’ group. ‘The IS-Khorasan may carry out terrorist attacks on the British territory. In the future, the UK may have to seek the Taliban’s assistance to take action against ‘IS-Khorasan’,’ the general said.
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson had earlier indicated that Britain would give conditional recognition to the Taliban rule. Against the backdrop, the warnings issued against the threat of terrorist attacks to the UK draws much attention.
Meanwhile, Britain’s Air Chief Marshal, Mike Wingston, has warned that British air force may carry out airstrikes against the IS in Afghanistan. The British air force may carry out airstrikes if the UK or its allies are potentially at direct or indirect risk of a terrorist attack and terrorists show signs of gaining influence. Internationally, the UK plays a vital role against the global fight against the IS,’ Air Chief Marshal Sir Mike Wingston asserted. Moreover, the Air Chief Marshal stated that although Afghanistan is one of the most inaccessible parts of the world, the UK’s Royal Air Force can operate there.
