Kiev: The United States is ready to supply advanced weapon systems to the Ukrainian air force and navy in view of Russia’s support to the groups in eastern Ukraine. The US Special Representative for Ukraine Negotiations, Kurt Volker indicated increased defence cooperation with Ukraine during an interview with a British daily. Only four months ago, the US Department of State had informed that the United States supplied the Javelin anti-tank missile system to Ukraine.
Two days ago, the United States informed that the Russian navy was performing dangerous manoeuvres in the Sea of Azov near Ukraine. It also claimed that Russian naval movements are a part of the strategy to increase the extent of the east Ukrainian conflict. Following that information was revealed that Alexander Zakharchenko, the self-proclaimed leader of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine was killed in a blast.
Russia reacted very strongly against it and warned that it would be retaliated against. Previously, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko had also claimed that Russia was amassing large military contingents for an attack on Ukraine. Against this background, the indications given by the US envoy are considered significant.
The United States has supplied 210 Javelin missiles to Ukraine till date and has also supplied them with 37 launchers for it. A transaction that is believed to be worth $47 million. Nevertheless, the United States avoided supplying lethal weapons to Ukraine. However, the it has decided to change its policy and has started making moves to majorly increase the defence cooperation with Ukraine further.
The Ukrainian military is defending their country and thus, helping them is just natural, claimed Volker.
