World paying a high price as China withheld information on the Novel Coronavirus: US President Trump

Washington: The US President, Donald Trump sharply criticised China as he said, ‘It would have been much better if we had known about this a number of months earlier. It could have been contained to that one area in China where it started. China, however, did not do that, and now the world is paying a big price for what they (China) did.’ Perhaps the information China is releasing now is also accurate, Trump retorted. Former US Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley joined hands in criticising China saying that the country’s early actions had caused the spread of the virus across the globe.

The US President has been referring to the virus as Chinese virus rather than as the Novel Coronavirus or COVID-19. While addressing a press conference on Thursday, President Trump directly targeted China, blaming it for the spread of the pandemic. ‘Had China been transparent and informed the world about the virus, we could have averted its worldwide spread. China’s Communist Party nevertheless decided to conceal information and the world is paying a high price for what they did. The world is now reeling from the impact of the deadly Chinese virus,’ Trump said.

‘I was concerned about the possible spread of the virus. That is why I had banned the entry of all Chinese nationals into the US. At the time, the US media had even accused me of inciting racism,’ the US President said as he reminded the media representatives of the incident. After Trump voiced allegations, former US Ambassador to the UN took aim at China as well. ‘China is now trying to create a narrative that it’s an example of how to handle this crisis when in fact its early actions led to the virus spreading around the globe,’ Haley stated.

As she supported the US President’s remarks, Former US Ambassador Haley, fired a salvo of criticism towards China. Haley asserted that if China had informed earlier about the new Coronavirus, the cases of contraction could have been reduced by up to 95 per cent and the geographical spread would have remained limited. Meanwhile, the US has imposed a National Emergency due to the rapid spread of the Coronavirus, and now House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has put forth the demand to invoke the Defense Production Act.

‘The requisite amount of critical medical supplies is not available for the treatment of Coronavirus patients in the US. We are experiencing an acute shortage of such supplies and thus also challenges in addressing the pandemic. Taking cognisance of the matter, I, thereby, urge President Trump to invoke the Defense Production Act and ramp up the mass-production of supplies,’ Pelosi said
