As tensions rise, US conducts massive military exercise in Indo-Pacific

Washington: Two of US super aircraft carriers, along with more than ten destroyers, 400 paratroopers and reconnaissance aircraft, participated in naval drills that recently concluded in the Indo-Pacific. The wargames took place in the marine limits between the Guam Island, Taiwan Strait and the Philippine waters. The exercises were carried out with the aim of taking control of the islands in the Indo-Pacific in a likely future war situation, US agencies informed. Amid rising tensions with China, the US exercises from the Guam Island to the Philippine marine boundaries, are a warning for Beijing.

The drills included wargames that simulated taking over the Anderson Air Force Base on the Guam Island and securing the airstrip on the base. ‘The US could achieve the objective of rapidly deploying US troops at any base in the Indo-Pacific and taking control of the concerned area,’ a senior US military officer informed. Also, local media reported that the US drills were the largest-ever military exercises held on Guam Island.

Guam Island is in discussions for the last few days for various reasons. The US B-21 stealth bombers will be deployed at the island, located merely at a distance of 2,500 km from Japan. Only last month, the US had sent another fleet of the B-21 supersonic bomber planes equipped with anti-submarine missiles to the Guam Island. Besides, reports inform that the US is preparing to send the 9,500 soldiers being withdrawn from Germany to this marine region. Furthermore, pilots from the QUAD nations – India, Australia and Japan will receive specialised training from the US on the island. A few days ago, Taiwan’s senior military officials had visited the Guam Island and held talks with US officials. On the sidelines of the developments, the military drills conducted with paratroopers on Guam Island is indicative of an exquisite strategy.

The two US super aircraft carriers, USS Nimitz and USS Ronald Regan, carried out the exercises along with its strike group of destroyers and submarines. A senior US naval official informed that the wargames clearly indicated that the US aircraft carrier strike group was ready to counter any aggression in the marine region. About 10,000 soldiers had participated in the drills that were conducted at night. Last month, the USS Nimitz and the USS Roosevelt had carried out dual-carrier exercises in the region.

Reports reveal that 30 US planes have patrolled the South China Sea and the Philippine maritime limits since the last ten days. A few hours before the drills started, at least six patrol reconnaissance planes were patrolling the region, a website stated. These included electronic and signal intelligence aircraft, the Navy’s long-range patrol aircraft, drones, aircraft equipped with anti-submarine warfare as well as tanker aircraft for refuelling.

The drills in the Indo-Pacific were clearly a warning for China. After the US warships patrolled the South China Sea last week, China had criticised it. Therefore, a reaction is anticipated from China over the latest US exercises.
