Israel launched air raids on Syria’s Hama: Syrian Defence Minister

Damascus: Israeli warplanes carried out airstrikes in Syria’s western province of Hama. However, the Syrian Defence Ministry claims its air defence system successfully intercepted most of the Israeli airstrikes. Syria has accused Israeli warplanes of infiltrating Lebanon’s airspace and launching attacks on it. The Syrian human rights organisation has claimed that Israeli attacks targeted Iranian military bases in which six terrorists were killed.

The Syrian Defense Ministry has alleged that Israeli warplanes launched the airstrikes after midnight on Thursday. ‘Israel fired rockets at the town of Masyaf in the Hama province. In a statement, the Defence Ministry also said Israel had shown its aggression through the attacks, as it condemned the action. The ministry went on to say that the Syrian air defence system had neutralised Israeli rockets.

The Syrian Defense Ministry has said Israeli warplanes flew over Lebanese capital, Beirut and then charged till the Lebanese city of Tripoli, near the Syrian border. The fighters then launched attacks on the Huma province. The Syrian Defense Ministry declined to give details of the damage caused by the Israeli airstrikes. Nevertheless, human rights groups in Syria have reported differently on the attacks.

In the Friday attacks, Israeli fighters targeted Iranian military bases in Masayaf city. A human rights group stated that six members of Iranian proxies had been killed in the attack. Neither the Israeli government nor the military has responded to the allegations made by the Syrian Defense Ministry.

The town of Masyaf in Hama province is considered to be of significant military importance. The city also houses the Syrian Army Academy as well as military-related science research centres. Besides, Iranian soldiers and Iranian-linked terrorist organisations are said to hold a strong influence in Masyaf city. In the past, there have been reports of Israeli strikes targeting Iranian bases and locations.

Only last month, Israel had hit Syrian-controlled part of Golan Heights. Israeli strikes targeted Quds Force as well as Iranian troops. While Iran has denied the allegations, human rights groups in Syria say at least eight people were killed in the Israeli operation.

Later, reports revealed that the Syrian army had stepped up their presence near Israel’s Golan Heights. Moreover, Israel had claimed that Iran, Hezbollah, and other Iranian-backed militant groups were plotting to set up camp near the Israeli border under its garb. Israel has since deployed large numbers of troops in the Golan Heights, which had created tension in the region.
