Kabul: Around 58 Taliban militants have been killed in operations by Afghan forces in Kandahar and Farah provinces. Following that, twelve Afghan soldiers were killed in a Taliban attack on Saturday. Meanwhile, the United States has criticized the Taliban for threatening peace talks in Afghanistan by carrying out several attacks. Even so, the Biden administration has indicated that it will seek a solution to the conflict in Afghanistan through negotiations.

According to the Afghan Defense Ministry, the Afghan army launched a major operation in the Taliban-dominated province of Kandahar two days ago. At least 52 terrorists were killed in attacks on Taliban sites in Dand, Arghandab and Panjwai districts. Besides, 19 terrorist bombs were seized, and three bunkers were destroyed.

In the Iranian border province of Farah, Afghan army helicopters targeted a Taliban vehicle. Six Taliban militants were killed on the spot. The one-day operation claimed the lives of four Afghan soldiers. Outraged with the attack, Taliban launched a suicide attack on an Afghan Army base in Nangarhar province killing eight security personnel, Afghan security forces said.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the attack. The Afghan government has accused the Taliban, which is in negotiations with them, of violating the ceasefire agreement by carrying out terrorist attacks. Over the last year, Taliban attacks have risen sharply, and the Afghan government has accused the Taliban of targeting Afghan security forces. On the other hand, the Taliban has begun talks with Iran, accusing the United States of violating the ceasefire.

Pentagon press secretary John Kirby expressed concern over the situation in Afghanistan. Moreover, Kirby made a critical indication that the violence in Afghanistan could lead to a delay in the withdrawal of US troops from the country.
