Rio De Janeiro – Jair Bolsonaro, also known as ‘Tropical Trump’, jolted the leftist regime in Brazil, which was in power for the last 15 years. Bolsonaro recorded an emphatic win in the presidential elections. Nationalistic right-wing candidate Bolsonaro, a former army captain won an additional million votes as compared to his left-wing opponent Fernando Haddad. Moreover, a victory for Bolsonaro, who suffered a grievous attack during his campaign indicated, Latin America had also begun to shift towards the right-wing ideology.
The second and final round of voting for the presidential elections was held on Sunday the 28th of October. More than 105 million citizens exercised their franchise on the day. A staggering 90% of the vote cast during the elections drew the attention of the whole world towards the results. The pre-result surveys had predicted a lead for Bolsonaro.
The election results reflected Haddad to be leading only in the north-western part of Brazil while the right-wing congressman Bolsonaro, was leading in all the other regions. Bolsonaro’s win has come as a shock to many. Jair Bolsonaro won the presidential elections after receiving more than 55% of the vote.
The overwhelming response from the electorate to Jair Bolsonaro, a former army captain of the Brazilian military is quite remarkable. Bolsonaro raised a voice against the establishment through his campaign which focused on the issues like corruption, crime and excessive governmental interference. The anti-establishment and aggressive stand taken by Bolsonaro on various matters has earned him the title, ‘Tropical Trump’.
Bolsonaro had expressed support to the military dictatorship that ruled Brazil during the decades from 1960 to 1980. He also stated that more citizens should own guns to curb crime. He promotes privatisation and has accordingly announced possible privatisation of the government undertakings soon. Analysts claim the anti-establishment sentiment against the left-wing government can be attributed to the overwhelming response for Bolsonaro.
The President-elect thanked God after his victory and has promised to vow, bearing God as the witness for a complete transformation of Brazil. He is to assume office as the President on 1st of January, 2019. Also, the United States and all of the Latin American countries have congratulated him over the landslide victory.
