Five scientists killed in explosion near Russian nuclear reactor, 250-km radius evacuated over radiation fears

Moscow/Washington: The Russian agencies tried to lessen the mystery surrounding the blast in Severodvinsk last week. The Russian nuclear agency announced that five scientists were killed in an explosion caused as a result of a terribly failed missile test near a small nuclear plant in Nyonoksa, Russia. Furthermore, the Russian agencies have termed the incident an accident. What’s more, US President Donald Trump reacted to the incident saying that the United States was learning much from the failed Russian missile test.

On the 8th of August, a massive explosion occurred in the city of Severodvinsk, located nearly 400 kilometres from capital Moscow. The locals reported the incident on social media referring to it as a deafening explosion although the Russian agencies had refused to comment on the matter. Immediately after the event, citizens located in areas within a 250-kilometre radius from the explosion site were moved elsewhere, and the military took control of the evacuated area.

President Vladimir Putin dispatched senior officials to Severodvinsk after calling for an urgent meeting with the Defence Minister and senior military officials. The global media is carefully following the accident as it involved rapid developments within a matter of hours. Two significant explosions were also reported in Russia a week before this explosion. However, massive military movements were not observed at the time of the previous blasts. The UK media have therefore accused the Russian government of trying to cover up the incident involving the explosion at Severodvinsk.

After maintaining silence for nearly four days, the Russian agencies revealed the preliminary details of the explosion on Monday. A missile test was being conducted at a military base near a small nuclear power reactor. Nevertheless, the test failed due to a particular malfunction leading to the explosion. The explosion has claimed the lives of five scientists who have been honoured by Russia as national heroes. Additionally, President Putin is believed to have taken serious cognisance of the accident.

On the other hand, while speaking on the explosion near the nuclear power reactor, US President Donald Trump termed the explosion a ‘Skyfall’. In a post on social media, President Trump stated that “The United States is learning much from the failed missile explosion in Russia. We have similar, though more advanced, technology. The Russian “Skyfall” explosion has people worried about the air around the facility, and far beyond. .”
