Yerevan/Baku: The war raging between Armenia and Azerbaijan since the past nine days only appears to be intensifying with each passing day. Armenia has accused Azerbaijan of using prohibited cluster bombs in the conflict. On the other hand, Azerbaijan government has alleged that Armenia had fired missiles and rockets into civilian areas. Also, an Irani religious leader representing Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei caused a sensation by announcing support for Azerbaijan.  

Both warring nations have claimed the battle attacks have intensified since Sunday. Armenian Defence Ministry has alleged that Azerbaijan used the cluster bombs prohibited under United Nations (UN) convention in Nagorno-Karabakh, the disputed region which has been the cause of the war. The Armenian Defence Ministry Spokesperson also released some photographs to support the country’s assertions. Further, the state said the cluster bombs were used on civilian areas in Karabakh. The Armenian Spokesperson informed that the prime cities of Stepanakert and Shushi in Nagorno-Karabakh were constantly under missile and rocket fire in the last 24 hours. At the same time, a senior Azerbaijan official has threatened that attacks would be launched on Armenian soil from now on.  

Azerbaijan has accused the Armenian Army of targeting three new cities which are far from the battlefield. Earlier, Armenia had targeted Ganja, the second-largest city of Azerbaijan and its airport is said to have been destroyed. After that, Azerbaijan has accused Armenia of launching missile attacks on Tartar, Barda and Beylagan. Further, Azerbaijan Defence Ministry also accused Armenia of targeting civilian settlements in the attacks, in which several civilians are said to have lost their lives. However, Armenia has rejected all claims.   

In the meantime, Iran is believed to have stepped into the Armenia-Azerbaijan war. The religious leader representing Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei has openly vowed support for Azerbaijan. Also, the religious leaders in provinces of East Azerbaijan, West Azerbaijan, Zanjan and Ardabil on Azerbaijan-Iran borders have asserted that Azerbaijan’s invasion was apt. They claim the move is in accordance with the United Nations (UN) convention.

In the last week, claims of Iran providing weapons to Armenia had surfaced. Nevertheless, Iran had rebuffed the claims. Later, mortars were reported to have fallen into Iranian territory. Besides, Turkey and Pakistan had earlier declared open support for Azerbaijan in its war with Armenia. The statements of Iranian religious leaders have raised strong suspicions over the country now supporting Azerbaijan as well. The battle, therefore, may soon intensify significantly.
