Turkey is facilitating Somali migration to Greece, accuses Greek minister

Athens/Ankara: A Greek minister alleged that Turkey is pushing Somalian migrants into Greece. The minister stated that around 150 Somalian migrants, who had been facilitated in this manner, had entered into the Greek island of Lesvos last month. Only a few months ago, satellite images had revealed Turkey was deliberately pushing thousands of migrants into Greece. Greece had then erected fences over large areas at the borders and deployed additional security forces to stop the migrants.

Turkey is repeatedly sending its ships near the Greek territorial waters and even threatening the country in an attempt to provoke it. Therefore, Greece has adopted an aggressive stance and made massive military deployments to curb Turkish activities. At the same time, Greece has attained success in adding international pressure on Turkey. The European Union (EU) has warned the country of imposing sanctions over the matter. After that, Turkey softened its tone with Europe in a bid to avert the sanctions.

In 2016, Turkey was given the responsibility of providing asylum to the influx of migrants approaching Europe as per a deal between the two sides. For that, Europe had offered financial assistance as even huge trade concessions to Turkey. Turkey nevertheless exploited the situation and began using migrants as a weapon against Europe. Last year, Turkish President Recep Erdogan had threatened to release millions of migrants into Europe.

Considering the events, the latest accusation from the Greek minister is significant. While placing the blame on Turkey for trafficking migrants, Greek Migration Minister Notis Mitarakis exposed the manner in which it is being carried out. The minister said that ‘Turkish Embassy and other federal departments in Somalia are encouraging citizens to travel to Turkey as asylum seekers and are using student visas extensively for the purpose. When they arrive at Turkey, the migrants are placed in different cities for a few days and then moved to the Turkey-Greece border.’

Also, he underscored that from the asylum seekers arriving into Greece last month, almost 150 were from Somalia. ‘Moreover, the migrants rescued from a Greek island a few days ago also included Somalian nationals. Some of them admitted Turkish agencies had assisted them,’ the Greek minister said.

The most recent Turkish activities may cause the already strained relations between Greek and Turkey to worsen likely.
