Washington/Beijing: USS Nimitz, a US nuclear supercarrier, has entered the Indo-Pacific region. In the last few months, the massive aircraft carrier was deployed in the Middle East region under the US Central Command (CENTCOM). However, at the start of the week, the USS Nimitz and its carrier group were sent to the Indo-Pacific region by new US Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin. As the USS Nimitz enters the Indo-Pacific, the US destroyer USS John S McCain travelled across the Taiwan Strait on Thursday, the Navy said.
After accepting the presidency last month, Joe Biden had indicated that the United States would maintain its current policy in the Indo-Pacific. US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin had testified at a hearing before the US Congress. Therefore, China once again launched aggressive military activity in the Indo-Pacific and the South China Sea. In the last 15 days, Chinese fighter jets have infiltrated into Taiwan’s airspace twice and conducted war games. Also, China had warned that Taiwan’s efforts at independence were a war threat.
In response to China’s growing aggression, the United States has also taken steps to increase its defence readiness in the Indo-Pacific. At the end of last month, the USS Theodore Roosevelt at the US Pacific base was deployed in the South China Sea. Furthermore, the US military, as well as long-range reconnaissance aircraft, are continually flying over the area. Right after, the USS John McCain, an advanced US destroyer, was found to have sailed through the Taiwan Strait on Thursday.
Last year, the United States stepped up its pressure on China by deploying three enormous aircraft carriers simultaneously in the Indo-Pacific region. Unsettled with the US action, China started threatening it with war and warned the US of being responsible for it. A few days ago, senior Chinese leader Yang Jiechi had warned the United States not to cross the ‘red line’. Nevertheless, ignoring China’s threats, the United States has hinted at maintaining its defence preparedness in the region, and the entry of the USS Nimitz appears to be part of the strategy.
