US will maintain strong military presence in Indo-Pacific: President Biden

Washington: US President Joe Biden announced that “The United States will maintain a strong military presence in the Indo-Pacific region. The deployment is not to start a conflict, but to prevent one.” President Biden explained that he had given a rough idea of the US policy to Chinese President Xi Jinping. The United States does not want to wage war against China and Russia, but the United States will continue to defend its interests at any cost, the US President said.

Indo-Pacific

President Biden took the stance while addressing both houses of the US Congress. “The US will maintain its military presence in the Indo-Pacific. The deployment will, however, not be to wage war but to avoid one. It will be similar to the US military deployment with NATO in Europe, which serves the same purpose. The US has adopted the policy for the Indo-Pacific region as well,” President Biden claimed. Also, Biden stated that he had briefed Chinese President Xi Jinping on the issue during a discussion.

President Biden has stated that “The United States does not expect conflicts with China and Russia. Nevertheless, the United States will make the right decision to protect its interests.” Furthermore, “The United States believes in competitiveness, and we welcome the competition with China. But America will stand up to unfair trade practices that undercut American workers and industries, like subsidies for state-owned enterprises and the theft of American technologies and intellectual property,” Biden warned. At the same time, the US President also said the United States would not ignore human rights abuse.

International news outlets have reported President Biden’s remarks on China and the Indo-Pacific region as he addressed both houses of the US Congress for the first time. Since Biden took over the US presidency, Chinese aggression has risen sharply. China was making moves during Donald Trump’s presidency, thinking there would be no reaction from the United States. But since Biden became president, China has intensified its hegemonic activities in the Indo-Pacific.

US

The military coup in Myanmar, encroachment in the Philippine territorial waters and the incursion into Taiwan’s borders are all the result of China’s increasingly aggressive and expansionist policies. President Biden’s critics say that China has become unruly because it is convinced that the US president will not take a hard line against it. Therefore, US interests are being threatened, and if the US continues with its passive stance on China, its allies will become insecure.

To address the protest, Biden had convened a Quad meeting with the prime ministers of India, Japan and Australia a few weeks ago. By reassuring both houses of the US Congress, President Biden has warned China of maintaining its military presence in the Indo-Pacific region. President Joe Biden is trying to show that he is neither pro-China or taking a lenient stance on it, as per allegations levelled against him. However, some analysts believe Biden’s anti-China rhetoric cannot be trusted. Outwardly, he may launch severe criticism against China and portray that he is taking action against the country. Nevertheless, he will not take direct action against China, but on the contrary, will adopt a stance that indirectly serves to benefit it.

When Barack Obama was the US president, he adopted a similar policy, giving China an opportunity to increase its influence and dominance. Now, analysts are bringing the fact that when Obama was president, Biden was the US vice president to everyone’s attention.
