Jerusalem: ‘Iran under the executioner Raisi will be more dangerous to the world, more destructive to the region and will strive to become an existential threat to Israel,’ warned Defence Minister Benny Gantz. Gantz also called for action against Iran, carrying out drone strikes on ships travelling through international waters. Ebrahim Raisi took over the presidency of Iran on Tuesday. Israel’s defence minister issued a warning to the international community in the wake of the event.
Raisi had received the most votes in Iran’s presidential election held in June. Raisi is seen as an aide of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei. Furthermore, Ayatollah Khamenei, who has a grip on Iranian politics, is believed to now adopt more aggressive and extremist policies through Raisi. Western analysts expect significant changes in Iran’s policy soon. Also, Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz warned the United States and European countries in that regard.
Defence Minister Benny Gantz called for everyone to work together to eliminate such a threat to the world. Besides, the Israeli defence minister drew attention to Iran’s growing maritime aggression over the past few years. There were five drone strikes on international ships in the past year, and Iran was behind them, Gantz said. The defence minister criticised that ‘Drones have also attacked oil factories in Saudi Arabia. The latest attack on the oil tanker MV Mercer Street which left two dead violates international law.’
‘This is exactly why we must act now against Iran, which not only aspires to the creation of a military nucleus but also leads to a dangerous arms race and reduces stability in the Middle East,’ Israeli Defence Minister Benny Gantz urged. Gantz also warned that ‘Israel has a variety of tools and options to protect its citizens, and we will take action against anyone who seeks to harm us’.
Meanwhile, Raisi will be sworn in next Thursday. Iran’s newly elected president Raisi announced before the reporters on Tuesday that he would snub the US and European sanctions after the inauguration. Moreover, the Israeli media claim that Raisi’s stand could come as a blow to the United States and European countries, eager to reach a nuclear deal with Iran.
