As Taliban take over, their terror sparks deadly struggle to leave Afghanistan

Kabul: The Taliban’s brutal rule has spread fear among Afghan people, who are preparing to leave the country by any possible means. Afghans are willing to risk their lives for fleeing and seeking refuge in another country. Colossal crowds had gathered at the Kabul airport. Five people have been killed in a shooting by US troops, trying to stop people from entering the US plane. As they did not get to board the plane leaving Afghanistan, two people holding on to its wheel fell and died when the aircraft was in the air. The incident alone is enough to shed light on the dire situation in Afghanistan.

AfghanistanMullah Baradar, the Taliban’s second-in-command, had ordered his comrades on Sunday not to loot. However, reports have surfaced of Taliban militants looting and harassing women in different parts of Afghanistan. The Taliban also seized pistols and rifles, maintained by Afghans for self-defence. Furthermore, in capital Kabul, Taliban militants have infiltrated the presidential palace, parliamentary building and interior ministry. The Taliban even captured Afghanistan’s largest Bagram airbase and freed thousands of its militants.

Frightened Afghans rushed to Kabul airport after photographs and videos of the Taliban’s brutality surfaced on social media in Afghanistan. In addition, the Taliban’s ban on passenger flights only fuelled fears among Afghans. Afghan citizens are now urging airport officials to take as much money from them to get them out of Afghanistan.

On Sunday night, some Afghans tried to board a US military plane forcefully. US troops opened fire at the time, which left five Afghans dead. Some Afghans attempted to board a military plane bound for the United States and travel on its wheels on Monday morning. The number of Afghans who managed to accomplish this is unknown, although two Afghans hanging on the wheels fell and died when the aircraft was in the air. Even after the incident, thousands of Afghans are crowding the Kabul airport, willing to put their lives at risk.

However, the Taliban have not occupied the entire territory of Afghanistan. The northern province of Panjshir is still independent. Ahmad Massoud, the son of Ahmad Shah Massoud, who fought against the Taliban regime two decades ago, is in power here. Therefore, the possibility of the Taliban trying to take control of Panjshir in the near future cannot be denied.

Meanwhile, Vice President Amrullah Saleh was defiant and delivered a message to Afghans frightened by the Taliban regime. ‘Never, under any circumstances, will I bow to the Taliban. I will never betray the values of my role model Ahmad Shah Massoud. I will not disappoint those who believe in me. We will never reconcile with the Taliban,’ Saleh said as he called for a revolt against the Taliban.
