Washington: Russia has launched a sophisticated armed satellite into Earth’s orbit, which could be a potential threat to the US, warns General John Raymond, Chief of Space Operations, US Space Force. Raymond has also warned that Russia has designed the satellite to resemble the outer shell of a weapon. Last year, Russia had tested a space-based anti-satellite weapons system that could strike another satellite from its satellite. 

In a security report released in April, a US Defence Intelligence Agency warned that Russian technology and missiles pose a potential threat to US satellites. Russia has tested anti-satellite missiles capable of striking satellites in space twice in the last few months. Therefore, Gen. Raymond’s warning assumes much significance. 

Gen. Raymond issued the warning at the Air, Space & Cyber Conference. The Chief of Space Operations drew attention to Russia’s launch of a low-Earth orbit satellite, whose system is equipped with advanced weapons. The Russian weapons systems could destroy US satellites needed for communications and command and control of its armed forces, General Raymond warned. He also said that Russia had designed the satellite that was encased in another. 

In the last few years, both Russia and China have been making aggressive moves in space. Over the past year, Russia has deployed satellites that could be used as weapons in space. Simultaneously, a Russian satellite was found to have made moves to target another satellite from space in several instances. The US and UK had criticized the incidents as extremely dangerous. Russia has also developed missiles that can strike satellites in space from Earth. Additionally, Russia has successfully tested such missiles in the past few months. 

The UK has also expressed its concern over Russia’s rising threat. A few weeks ago, a British defence official warned that Russian space operations were a growing threat to the space domain.
