Washington/Beijing: – The US intelligence agencies have claimed that China is making moves to build a military base in the Atlantic Ocean. Efforts are underway to build this base in Equatorial Guinea, a country from the African continent. US officials have even visited the country to stop this Chinese effort. The daily ‘The Wall Street Journal’ published a report on this matter. Chinese mouthpiece, ‘The Global Times’, refuted this claim made by the US media and has accused that this is an effort to create a facade of the Chinese threat.
China is making solid moves to increase its influence at the international level. The Chinese communist regime is taking steps to create domination on the political and financial level to fulfil its military ambitions. The ambitious Belt and Road Initiative scheme of President Jinping is also considered to be a part of the same effort. China uses predatory economic tactics like providing financial assistance to strategically located countries and extracting strategic land parcels from these countries in return. It has been exposed that such activities are happening in countries from Asia, Africa and the Indo-Pacific.
China is implementing massive projects in important ports in Africa, alongside Pakistan, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, and the United Arab Emirates. It is believed that there are Chinese military objectives under the disguise of economic interests. These Chinese movements have had repercussions in US circles. Therefore, the US administration has started frantic efforts to stop this building of Chinese military bases. The issue of the Bata port in Equatorial Guinea is currently on the anvil.
Bata is known as an important ‘Deep Water Port’ in the Atlantic marine region. In the last decade, the Chinese Company ‘China Road and Bridge Company’ had modernised the port. It is said that China had created and retained certain facilities in the port. Therefore, the US intelligence agencies had expressed suspicions that the Chinese plan could set up a military base at the port in the future. US Deputy National Security Advisor Jonathan Finer even visited Equatorial Guinea in October, taking cognisance of these suspicions. It is said that the US officials reprimanded this country’s leadership that if such a base is created, it would matter of grave concern in respect of national security. They also assured that the United States would provide all the necessary assistance for this purpose.
Furthermore, China has set up its first overseas military base in Djibouti, Africa, over the last decade. Before setting up the base, China has reportedly provided financial support on a massive scale to the Djibouti government. The US agencies have doubted that a similar tactic is being used in Equatorial Guinea. The Chinese government mouthpiece ‘The Global times’ has dismissed these reports published in the US media. It has been said that these claims regarding the military bases are false, citing experts from China. The Chinese mouthpiece accused the United States of spreading these reports to create a facade of the so-called Chinese threat.
