US and allies will ‘respond decisively’ if Russia invades Ukraine; US President Joe Biden assures Ukraine

Washington / Moscow / Kyiv – US President Joe Biden has assured that the United States and its allies will respond decisively to Russia if it invades Ukraine. A White House spokesman informed that the assurance was given during a telephonic conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Last week, the President of the US and his Russian counterpart had a telephone conversation. Therein, the US had warned Russia to impose tougher sanctions.

Moreover, US and Ukraine have claimed that Russia has deployed about 100,000 troops on Ukraine’s border. Western leaders and analysts have warned that these deployments are preparations for a new invasion of Ukraine. Russia has denied the allegations and retaliated that the US and Western countries are trying to fester the situation unnecessarily. At the same time, Russian President Vladimir Putin had also proposed a security pact to reduce tensions over Ukraine. Following the proposal, there has been a telephone conversation between US President Biden and Putin. Simultaneously, it has also been announced that senior US and Russian officials will hold talks next week.

Against this backdrop, Biden’s call to the President of Ukraine proves to seek attention. White House spokesperson Jen Psaki said Biden had reassured the Ukrainian President on the security issue. ‘President Biden made clear that the United States and its allies and partners will respond decisively if Russia further invades Ukraine,’ Psaki said. At the same time, Biden told Zelensky that he would not make a final decision unless Ukraine was taken into confidence, clarified the spokesperson.

Ukrainian President Zhelensky mentioned in a post on social media that issues such as peace and the prevention of provocative actions in Europe were discussed. Meanwhile, it has been reported that Biden has postponed possible changes to his nuclear policy in the wake of the ongoing aggressive activities by Russia and China. On accepting the reins of office, President Biden had signalled that he would adopt ‘no first use’ or ‘sole purpose’ defensive policy on nuclear weapons. However, analysts said Biden would not make the mistake of assuming a defensive stance, given the possibility of an attack by China on Taiwan and Russia on Ukraine. Analysts say that if the policy changes now, Biden’s opponents will confuse him on the issue of Russia and China.
