Ukraine conflict could prolong, warns NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg

Brussels / Kyiv – Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed issues on establishing peace with Ukraine at a Russian Security Council meeting. Russian media has claimed that the Russian President is firm on his demands and is optimistic about the peace talks. Besides, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has said that Russia is keen to continue peace talks with Ukraine through Turkish mediation in the near future. But the conflict in Ukraine will not end soon, it could continue for some months or years to come, warned NATO Chief Jens Stoltenberg. Also, NATO member states should prepare for this long-term conflict; Stoltenberg has conveyed.

Moreover, discussions will be held regarding the withdrawal of permanent membership of Russia in the UN Security Council in the next few hours. The United States and European countries have been preparing to impose tougher sanctions on Russia. Against this backdrop, NATO convened a meeting of Foreign Ministers of member states in Brussels on Wednesday. Besides, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba was also present at the meeting. The Ukrainian Foreign Minister demanded large-scale weapon aid from NATO.

Moreover, Kuleba appealed that the NATO member states should put their differences aside and supply weapons stocks to Ukraine. Ukraine is in dire need of air defence systems, tanks, artillery and fighter jets from NATO. NATO Chief Stoltenberg also warned that the conflict in Ukraine needed to be realistic and that it would last for long.

Russia does not want to end the conflict in Ukraine; it wants to take over the whole of Ukraine, Stoltenberg claimed. Moreover, he appealed to the NATO member states to provide arms to Ukraine. Stoltenberg also said that member states are expected to assist in imposing sanctions on Russia and strengthen NATO’s security apparatus.
