Moscow / Kyiv – At least 50 people have been killed and over 100 injured in a missile attack on the Kramatorsk railway station in the eastern Ukrainian province of Donetsk. Russia has accused Ukraine of using Tochka-U missiles in Friday’s attack. However, Ukraine and other Western nations have claimed that Russia has launched the attack and has mentioned strong protests against it. Russia’s Defence Ministry has categorically denied the news of the attack and has said that an incident is a form of provocation.
In the past few days, the information has surfaced that Russia has focused on its action in eastern Ukraine. Analysts in Ukraine and the West claim that Russia has planned to seize complete control of the eastern Ukrainian provinces of Donetsk and Luhansk. Against this backdrop, Thursday’s horrific attack leads to attention. As attacks intensify in east Ukraine, local citizens have begun to migrate in large numbers. Thus, about four thousand citizens had gathered at the railway station.
Two missiles were fired at the railway station and the area before the train could arrive for the civilians. Within minutes of the attack, Ukrainian officials claimed that Russia had launched the attack. Criticising Russia, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has also accused Russia of saying it is a satanic country and has crossed all limits. Ukrainian authorities have also published photographs of the missile used in the attack, which reads ‘for children’ in Russian.
Moreover, Touchka-U missiles have been used to attack the train station. Both Russia and Ukraine use these missiles, which Russia had developed in the last century. Russia had earlier claimed that the missile had been used in an attack in Donetsk in March. Russia’s Defence Ministry has denied the allegations of Russia being involved in Friday’s attack on the Kramatorsk railway station. Russian forces had not carried out any military action in the Kramatorsk region on Friday, a Russian spokesman said. However, Ukraine and Western nations have continued to accuse Russia, saying Friday’s attack was a ‘clear example’ of Russian atrocities.
Meanwhile, the conflict in eastern Ukraine will be reminiscent of World War II, said Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba. The conflict will use large quantities of tanks, artillery, armoured vehicles and fighter jets, and Russia has drawn a plan for the conflict, claimed the Ukrainian Foreign Minister.
