In case Nuclear War flares up, the number of victims will rise to 5 billion

Washington – If the nuclear war between the US and Russia flares up, it will have far-reaching effects on the world’s agriculture, and the people of many countries will have to face a terrible famine. Due to this, five billion people worldwide will die in a few years, warned Rutgers, a University of the US. Researchers at the university have predicted six possibilities regarding nuclear war and its consequences, out of which ‘US-Russia nuclear war’ will be the most destructive and devastating. A few days ago, UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that one mistake could lead humanity to nuclear annihilation, pointing to the conflict in Ukraine and nuclear threats in Asia and the Middle East.

Moreover, Rutgers University’s Department of Environmental Sciences researchers recently released a nuclear war report. The report titled ‘Nuclear War Would Cause a Global Famine and Kill Billions’ draws attention to the severe consequences of nuclear war. It has presented six possibilities of nuclear war. Among them, five possibilities are nuclear war between ‘India-Pakistan’ and the sixth possibility is US-Russia nuclear war.

The researchers have made these predictions on the number of nuclear weapons India-Pakistan and the US-Russia possess and their use. In the event of a nuclear war between India-Pakistan, the enormous fire it creates could affect the light and energy from the sun. Therefore, in the next five years, there would be a decrease in the world’s agricultural production and the quantity of foodgrain by almost seven per cent. Due to this decline, billions of people worldwide may have to face starvation and death. As the Rutgers University report warned, Africa and the Gulf countries will have to bear the most loss.

Moreover, the report feared that if a nuclear war flares up between the US and Russia, a terrible starvation crisis would fall upon more than 75% of the world’s population in just two years. Attention was also drawn to the danger of destroying 90% of the world’s agriculture in three to four years due to this nuclear war. Along with agriculture, the production of domestic animals and fish will also be significantly affected and create a shortage, the report also mentioned. Furthermore, Rutgers researchers also warned that a US-Russia nuclear war would destroy the ozone layer on Earth and have dire consequences when harmful UV rays reach the Earth.

Alan Robock, a researcher at Rutgers University, reacted that the information in this report underlines the fact that we should strive to prevent a nuclear war from ever happening. Last year, a report released by the Swedish research group SIPRI revealed an increase in the number of nuclear weapons deployed by nine nuclear-armed countries worldwide. Then, at a meeting held at the United Nations earlier this month, the Secretary-General of the United Nations warned of nuclear annihilation and made aware of the growing threat of nuclear weapons.
