Russia pulls out of grain deal after Ukrainian drone attacks in Crimea

Moscow/Kyiv: A strong reaction has emanated from Russia after Ukraine launched an attack on its naval base in Crimea. Russia announced it is walking out of the grain deal mediated by the United Nations (UN) and Turkey. Also, Russia has accused Ukraine of using the corridor created for this deal to launch an attack on the Russian naval base. The United States and European countries, along with Ukraine, have strongly criticised the Russian decision to exit from the grain deal. The US Secretary of State criticised Russia was using food grains as a weapon again.

grain dealOn Saturday early morning, Ukraine launched drone attacks on the Russian naval base in the Sevastopol port in Crimea. The Russian Defence Ministry informed that a Russian warship and some other ships were damaged in the attack. Ukraine is also said to have used underwater drones for this attack. Besides, Russia has accused the United States and the UK of assisting Ukraine in carrying out the attack.

The Russian Defence Ministry has claimed that a US Reaper drone was patrolling the Black Sea region while the drone attacks were being carried out on the Russian port. Russia also alleged that a special UK group assisted Ukraine in planning this drone attack. Moreover, Russia has stated that the attack on the Sevastopol port was a terrorist attack. Russia also warned of strong retaliation to the attacks. The United States and the UK have denied the accusations and claimed that there is no truth in the claims.

Russia has alleged that Ukraine used the humanitarian corridor created under ‘The Black Sea Grain Initiative’ for the drone attack in Crimea. The Russian Defence and Foreign Ministries have announced that Russia will not be a part of this initiative and is exiting from it. Russia had signed the Grain Deal mediated by the United Nations and Turkey in July. According to the deal, a safe passage was created for exporting millions of tonnes of food grain stranded in the Ukrainian ports. Under the initiative, millions of tonnes of food grain were exported to European, African and Asian countries.

However, analysts are claiming that with Russia now exiting from the grain deal, the world food grain shortage crisis could take a turn for the worse. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken accused Russia of using food grains as a weapon again. At the same time, Ukraine has claimed that Russia is blackmailing the international community.
