Russia launches fierce attacks on Ukraine’s Kharkiv and Sumy

Moscow/Kharkiv: After withdrawing from Ukraine’s Kharkiv region two months ago, the Russian army launched heavy attacks on Kharkiv and Sumy regions again. In the last 48 hours, the Ukrainian authorities reported that Russia carried out more than 100 attacks in these two regions. Russia is said to have used artillery guns, tanks, rockets, mortars and missiles in these attacks. Just 24 hours ago, Russia was found to have launched heavy attacks on Bakhmut and other fronts in the Donbas region. As the Russian attacks escalate, a senior US State Department official, Victoria Nuland, is visiting Ukraine.

Kharkiv and SumyIn September, Russian forces were forced to withdraw from the city of Kharkiv and the surrounding area. Ukrainian and Western media had claimed that the Russian army’s withdrawal was a shame for President Putin’s campaign in Ukraine. It was also said that the Russian campaign would not last long after this retreat. However, these claims of the West have proved false. On the contrary, Russian forces have again started targeting Kharkiv and nearby areas. Even during the spate of missile strikes in October, Russia had fired missiles at Kharkiv and Sumy. Nevertheless, it is now coming to light that the Russian army is constantly launching attacks with the help of artillery guns, tanks and mortars.

According to Ukrainian agencies, the Russian army attacked Kupiansk, Izium and several areas in districts of Kharkiv province on Saturday. Ukraine claimed Russia had also used the ‘S-300’ missiles in these attacks. Earlier on Friday, more than 70 attacks were carried out in four parts of Sumy province. Mortars and artillery systems were used extensively for these attacks. Besides, the attacks are said to have delivered a blow to the Ukrainian military’s campaign in Donbas.

As Russia ramped up its attacks again, Victoria Nuland, a senior US State Department official, arrived in Ukraine for a visit. She met President Zelensky and senior leaders and officials in the capital Kyiv. At the same time, she also inspected the damage caused by the Russian attacks. Newland criticized Putin and said, “Putin has made the war in Ukraine more vicious and brutal. Since there is no success on the battlefield, he is trying to claim success by cutting off the electricity and water supply to every house in Ukraine.” The US official also accused the Russian President of not being honest on the issue of peace talks.

Meanwhile, photographs of Russia setting up a new military base in the city of Mariupol in the Donetsk region were released. Russia had captured the city in May. Since then, Russia has consolidated its grip on the town, and constructing a new military base here is part of its agenda.
