Risk of nuclear war between US and Russia rising due to Ukraine conflict

Moscow/Washington: The international agreement on nuclear disarmament and the mechanism based on it have collapsed, and there is no possibility of any improvement anytime soon. At the same time, nuclear-armed countries like Russia and the United States constantly warn of using nuclear weapons in extreme situations. In view of this, the media and analysts are claiming that the possibility of a nuclear war between Russia and the United States, the two leading countries in the world, has increased. Only a few days ago, Russian President Vladimir Putin also warned that the threat of nuclear war is constantly growing, and it would be incorrect to deny this rising threat. On Sunday, the Russian Defence Ministry announced that a regiment of nuclear-capable Avangard hypersonic missiles had been put into operation.

The ‘Avangard Hypersonic Missile’ speed is 27 times the speed of sound, and it is said that this missile can penetrate any target on earth within 30 minutes. The Russian defence department also claimed that deploying the new missile would increase Russia’s ‘Strategic Missile Forces’ combat capability. Just last week, Russia released photographs and videos showing the Yars nuclear missile system deployment at a base in the capital Moscow.

With the deployment of ‘Yars’ and ‘Avangard’ within a few days and at the same time President Putin’s statement regarding the ‘Pre-emptive Strike Policy’, it seems that the issue of nuclear war is once again taking centre stage. Media and analysts in Russia, the United States and Europe have started discussing possibilities in this regard. After the start of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Russian President Putin ordered his nuclear forces to be on alert. This development sparked the discussion about nuclear war.

The United States and the United Kingdom also took an aggressive stance in response to the bold statements coming from Russia. US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said the United States could use nuclear weapons if necessary. Former British Prime Minister and former Foreign Minister Liz Truss also warned that the United Kingdom could use nuclear weapons as well. Furthermore, US National Security Adviser warned that the United States would respond with full force if Russia moves towards a nuclear attack. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also aggressively demanded NATO countries destroy Russian nuclear capabilities without waiting for Russia to launch an attack.

Russian scholar Konstantin Blokhin warned that if there is a nuclear war between Russia and the United States, the whole world will suffer the consequences, and everyone will lose something. Nevertheless, the possibility that these two countries would start a nuclear war over Ukraine has been dismissed simultaneously. On the other hand, Russian analyst Vladimir Vasiliev has claimed that the Western alliance may consider the option of a nuclear attack if it becomes apparent that Russia is likely to succeed in its campaign in Ukraine.
