Russia launches major airstrikes on Ukraine’s Odesa, Kharkiv & Kyiv

Moscow/Kyiv: In the wake of the “Victory Day” celebrated in Russia on May 9, the Russian Army has intensified its attacks on Ukraine. On Sunday night and Monday, Russia launched major airstrikes on Ukraine’s capital Kyiv, along with Odesa, Kherson, Mykolaiv and Kharkiv. Russia used drones along with long-range bombers for the attacks. The Russian military company “Wagner Group” claimed to have taken control of more than 95 per cent of the city of Bakhmut in Donbas while these attacks were underway.

Since the last week of April, Russia has launched massive missile and drone attacks again. The attacks on Sunday night and Monday are the fifth major in the last ten days. The capital Kyiv and the southern city of Odesa are regularly targeted in these attacks. As many as eight missiles were fired at Odessa in attacks on Sunday night and Monday. Ukraine said long-range bombers Tu-22M3 deployed in Crimea were used for the attacks.

In the attack on Odesa city, several buildings, including a warehouse, were set on fire, and there were reports of casualties. Missiles and drones were fired at the capital city of Kyiv. A large number of fires have also broken out in Kyiv, and cars and infrastructure are said to have been damaged. Local authorities reported more than 30 suicide drone attacks on Kyiv. At the same time, the Ukrainian Defence Ministry claimed that most of the missiles and drones were destroyed.

In addition to the capital Kyiv and Odesa, major attacks were also launched in Kharkiv, Kherson and Mykolaiv regions. Along with missiles, long-range rockets were also used to attack Kherson. The Ukrainian Defence Ministry said the Russian Army has carried out more than 60 airstrikes and 52 attacks with the help of rockets, artillery guns and mortars. Ukrainian media claimed that this was the biggest attack in the new year with the use of missiles, drones and rockets.

Ukrainian officials claim that Russia’s growing missile and drone strikes are aimed at wearing out the capabilities of Ukraine’s air defence systems. A few months ago, Western organizations and officials had warned that Ukraine is using a large number of air defence missiles and that their stock may run out in May. Keeping this in mind, Russia has increased the intensity of its airstrikes, said a Ukrainian military officer.

Meanwhile, there are indications that the ongoing conflict for Bakhmut in Donbas has reached its final stage. Russian military company Wagner Group claims that over 95 per cent of Bakhmut is under Russian control. Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of “The Wagner Group”, said the city would come under Russian control in the next few days.
