NATO may deploy troops to Sweden before becoming a member

Stockholm: There is uncertainty over Sweden’s membership in next month’s NATO meeting. Meanwhile, the Swedish government has announced taking a step forward. It will begin deploying NATO troops to Sweden before becoming a NATO member, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced. Prime Minister Kristersson also claimed that this decision sends a message to Russia. Two days ago, former NATO chief Anders Rasmussen stated that some NATO member states could form an independent alliance and send troops to Ukraine.

troops to Sweden, NATO, Sweden An important NATO meeting is being held in Lithuania in July. The US and NATO have taken the initiative so that Sweden is included in NATO before this meeting. A few days ago, a meeting of NATO Foreign Ministers was held in Oslo. The issue of Sweden’s membership was also on the agenda at this meeting. However, the Turkish Foreign Minister was not present for this meeting. It has also come to light that the US Secretary of State had made an appeal to Turkey before the meeting. US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said Sweden would be a NATO member before the July summit if Turkey withdraws its objections regarding Sweden’s inclusion in the military alliance.

However, NATO and the US talks with Turkey did not succeed. Because of this, the prospect of Sweden becoming a NATO member in July is unclear. Despite that, Sweden has taken the initiative to cooperate with NATO. Sweden’s military has been ordered to make necessary preparations for joint operations with NATO member countries. At the same time, Sweden is ready to deploy NATO military forces and weapons at Swedish bases if the need arises, announced Prime Minister Kristersson.

The area of Sweden, located in the Baltic Sea, is close to Russia’s Kaliningrad military base. Due to this, the US and NATO are expected to attempt surrounding Russia more with deployments in Sweden. Finland, which received NATO membership before Sweden, has already consented to deploy NATO troops and the necessary activities for this are said to have begun.

Meanwhile, former NATO chief Anders Rasmussen claimed that some NATO member states are ready to deploy troops to Ukraine. Rasmussen said if Ukraine does not get a firm guarantee about its security at the NATO meeting in July, Poland and some other NATO member countries will deploy their forces in Ukraine.
