Russia can use cluster bombs in Ukraine

Moscow/Kyiv – Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that if Ukraine uses cluster bombs, Russia can also use them in the attack. Putin has also claimed that Russia has not used it yet. The Russian Defence Ministry shared information that they had foiled a Ukrainian drone attack on a naval base in Crimea.

cluster bombsThe United States had announced the supply of cluster bombs to Ukraine, saying it would be worse for Russia to win than the loss of life due to the cluster bomb. Just a week later, it has become clear that the US cluster bomb has reached Ukraine. More than 100 countries have signed an international agreement against the use of these bombs, which are considered very deadly. However, it does not include the United States, Russia and Ukraine.

These cluster bombs, mounted on missiles and rockets, contain hundreds of small bomblets. It is possible to cause huge destruction by launching a big attack with this. However, many of these bomblets remain buried in the ground if they do not explode during the attack, and such bombs are likely to cause civilian deaths after a war. Thus, human rights groups have strongly opposed its use, and US allies have also expressed fierce displeasure.

Moreover, Russian President Vladimir Putin has also taken an aggressive stance on the issue of cluster bombs. He warned, ‘Russia has a sufficient supply of various cluster munitions. But of course, if they are used against us, we reserve the right to take reciprocal action. Until now, we have not done this, we have not used it, and we have not had such a need.’

Meanwhile, Russia stated that Ukraine tried to attack Crimea’s Sevastopol base on Saturday night, but the attack had been foiled. Ukraine used around ten drones and tried to carry out this attack by air and sea route. Some of these drones were neutralised with the help of Electronic Warfare Systems. The Russian Defence Ministry informed that the Russian Navy’s air defence system destroyed some drones.

Nevertheless, it is the fourth time Ukraine has targeted Crimea since last month. Nine drones had attacked Crimea the previous month, after which missiles targeted the bridge connecting Kherson and Crimea. Besides, there was also an attempt to attack the bridge linking Russia and Crimea with missiles a few days back. Russia had foiled all these attacks. Ukraine has not explicitly accepted responsibility for any of these attacks. However, President Volodymyr Zelensky had indicated that Ukraine’s military campaign would not stop without the annexation of Crimea.
